In this course, I will teach you how to understand leather craft design, how to decide what to make, how to make it, and the nuances that you need to keep in mind while making design decisions. Finally, I will show you how to draft a pattern for your design.
There are many ways to approach design, and I will be sharing with you the exact method that I use. However, feel free to experiment and try different techniques, as there are no hard and fast rules unless I specify otherwise.
I assume that you already possess basic leather craft knowledge and skills, however, if you’re interested in knowing what tools I use in my workshop, I will cover this topic here as well.
I will share my opinion with you about different types of leather and their appropriate usage. While it may seem obvious, there are important factors that you need to consider to avoid failures and disappointments, if you happen to accidentally choose the wrong type of leather for your design.
I create my patterns using Adobe Illustrator. Therefore, if you wish to follow my lessons, you will need to have Adobe Illustrator installed on your computer. If you prefer to use any other software, you will need to be able to translate the necessary actions to that software. The files that we use in this course are available for download in AI and EPS formats.

Hi there, my name is Marina Karlova, I live in Tbilisi, Georgia, and I love designing new stuff out of leather. I’ve been designing something most of my life (started in 1998 as a graphic designer) but around 2016 I found out that the most exciting thing to do is to design real things for real life.
I was born in Novosibirsk, Russia in 1981, lived in Moscow 1999 – 2009, in Ecuador 2009 – 2011, in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2011 – 2014, and in Rio Dulce, Guatemala (on my sailboat) in 2014 – 2021. In 2021 I came back to Russia for some reason, and then everyone knows what happened, so I have lost my business, all my shops were suspended, and in October 2022 moved to Tbilisi with one suitcase and Bonny. I had to leave all my tools and leather behind. Bonny is a chihuahua, who is my loyal friend, companion and inspiration.
She works at Karlova Design as a model and workshop assistant. She had been traveling with me since Guatemala, and she is the reason I started sewing (she needed tiny dog thingies like harnesses and carriers, now she’s got dozens).

In the introduction I’ll share some of my background, then dive into the approach for the course, it’s structure, how you’ll learn, and the steps we’ll take.
In Workshop Essentials I’ll tell you about some of the tools I always use when I work on my projects. Although it is not directly related to pattern making, but I get a lot of questions about it, and I think it would be useful to include this brief overview into this course.
When I first started working with leather, I tried using my sewing machine, but I quickly realized that it had too many limitations. That’s why I switched to hand stitching and have since enjoyed the freedom of sewing complex 3D shapes almost without any limits. I remember that feeling when I realized that I could make pretty much anything I could ever imagine! Welcome to the School of Magic.
In this section, I’ll share where I get ideas and inspiration, how I sketch, and concept new designs.
In this part of the course we will learn about different leather types and their usage – although it seems obvious but there are things you need to know to avoid failures and disappointments if you accidentally choose the wrong type of leather for your design.
There are lots and lots of different workspace options in Illustrator, and we won’t need all of them for pattern design. We’ll go through which ones you need, and setting up the digital workspace.
We’ll explore taking ideas from your imagination and turning them into patterns that can be printed and used. I’ll share how to create them, and show you how to make sure that you have an equal amount of stitching holes.
In this chapter I will cover basic principles of creating different kinds of stuff that is larger in size than those little thingies we’ve already made in the previous chapter.
I would like to encourage you to have fun and learn it the way I did: make miniatures first. For example, after making a little dice pouch you are then able to make anything of the similar shape of any size, even larger.
