The Opportunity

We go beyond just photo taking, you’ll learn the important elements that will help showcase your leather products and make them stand out, including:

  • Using the Right Equipment
  • Basic Principles of Exposition
  • Setting Up and Shooting
  • Post Production Processes

In this instructional course, I will teach you how to photograph leather products by understanding the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO for perfect exposure so you can bring out the unique qualities that might otherwise go unnoticed and perfect them in Photoshop for flawless imagery.

There are many ways to approach photographing leather products, and I will be sharing with you the exact method that I use. However, feel free to experiment and try different techniques, as there are no hard and fast rules unless I specify otherwise.

I will share my opinion about what equipment to use in setting up and shooting your leather products with the best lighting and post-production techniques including color adjustments, noise correcting, and other methods for cleaning up images to create a dramatic look with pronounced textures. Good photography can help build trust with your customers and communicate the quality and craftsmanship of your products so you can show off your leather goods the way they deserve.

I edit my photos using Photoshop. Therefore, if you wish to follow my lessons, you will need to have Photoshop installed on your computer. If you don’t have Photoshop, you can download an older trial version or try a CC trial subscription. If you prefer to use any other software, you will need to be able to translate the necessary actions to that software.

Meet Your Instructor

Hi there, my name is Marina Karlova, I live in Tbilisi, Georgia, and I love designing new stuff out of leather. I’ve been designing something most of my life (started in 1998 as a graphic designer) but around 2016 I found out that the most exciting thing to do is to design real things for real life.

I was born in Novosibirsk, Russia in 1981, lived in Moscow 1999 – 2009, in Ecuador 2009 – 2011, in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2011 – 2014, and in Rio Dulce, Guatemala (on my sailboat) in 2014 – 2021. In 2021 I came back to Russia for some reason, and then everyone knows what happened, so I have lost my business, all my shops were suspended, and in October 2022 moved to Tbilisi with one suitcase and Bonny. I had to leave all my tools and leather behind. Bonny is a chihuahua, who is my loyal friend, companion and inspiration.

She works at Karlova Design as a model and workshop assistant. She had been traveling with me since Guatemala, and she is the reason I started sewing (she needed tiny dog thingies like harnesses and carriers, now she’s got dozens).

These are some of my design awards:

  • Moscow XV International Advertising Festival 2005 (Gold)
  • Golden Site 2001 (Gold, Silver)
  • ADCR Awards (Short-list)
  • British Fashion Festival 2020, 2021 – Best Bag Designer
