This is an intermediate level painting course. While you don’t need to be a professional artist, the basics of painting and drawing are necessary.
Painting on a designer’s bag or even on a simple leather bag can be a bit intimidating. The step-by-step instructions that you will learn here have been put together so that you will feel much more secure when applying your first brushstroke to a leather bag.
These are the main topics we will cover in class:
I recommend using Photoshop, Procreate, or any other image editing software to create a “mockup” of the bag for our own visualization. You can do this step by hand as well if you feel more comfortable.
Your class project is to paint your own bag from beginning to end!
We will go over several steps, from researching and studying the first layouts to adding light, shadow, details, and the final varnish finish.
Although my style is a bit more realistic, you can use the tips learned here to customize a leather bag in your own style and even start selling them!
Sharing Your Work:
I’d love to see your creations, so please share them on Instagram and tag me @babiwrobel so I can share them, too!

My name is Barbara, but everyone calls me Babi and I am an illustrator, author, visual artist, and art teacher.
I was born and live in the sunny city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I grew up in the middle of the big city, surrounded by colors, the ocean, mountains, trees, beautiful beaches, colored pencils, comic books, and many animals.
I’ve always loved to draw and create new stories and imaginary worlds through my drawings. I was a sensitive and dreamy child who always wanted to be an artist. I still look after for my inner child with care and I always look for inspiration in her when the world outside doesn’t make sense to me.
My greatest joy as an artist is inspiring people to see the good, magical, and playful side of life, whether through images, stories, or teaching.
I have a degree in Illustration from the Pratt Institute in New York and another in Graphic Design from PUC in Rio de Janeiro. I started my career working with animation, an old passion.
My works were published in various media such as advertising, books, stamps, murals, magazines, prints, fashion, and packaging, among others.
Eventually, I focused my work on illustrating children’s books, looking for a more authorial career. I have illustrated more than 20 children’s books, and I also wrote with my dad, Todo Mundo Saiu, published in 2013 by Escrita Fina. In 2014, this book had 12 thousand copies purchased by Itaú Cultural and was distributed by public libraries nationwide.
I participated in some exhibitions, including the Elephant Parade 2018 and the exhibition Illustrating in Magazine – by Editora Abril, which toured Brazil in 2004.
I’ve also illustrated some Christmas stamps for the Brazilian Post Office. One of them won the São Gabriel International Prize for Philatelic Art in Italy.
I’ve taken several artistic courses and am always eager to learn new skills. I will always be a student, an eternal apprentice.
Whether as a children’s book illustrator or a mother, I’ve always had a lot of contact with children. And all of them always asked me to teach them how to draw. So, I put together all the lessons I had learned throughout my career and started teaching children. Later, teenagers and adults came. In 2020, I launched my Online Basic Drawing course for children, and in 2021, I launched my first English Drawing course on the SkillShare platform.
I like to work with both digital techniques and traditional materials, preferably mixing them all at the same time!
